The one-paragraph version
Eight Sleep is the smartest and most automated system — and the most expensive, because an annual membership is required for the full feature set. Sleepme's Chilipad cools and warms with water like Eight Sleep but charges no subscription, and its dual-zone setup is the couples' sweet spot. BedJet cools with air instead of water, needs no subscription, and costs the least — the value pick for hot sleepers who want comfort without complexity. All three support better sleep comfort; none of them treats a sleep condition.
The frame nobody else leads with: subscription vs. no-subscription
Sticker prices lie by omission. Only one of these three systems has a recurring cost — Eight Sleep's annual membership, required for the full feature set. The other two charge you once. Over five years, that changes the ranking:
| 5-year cost of ownership | Eight Sleep Pod | Sleepme Chilipad Dock Pro | BedJet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device (typical band at our last check) | $2,599–$2,999 | $1,599–$2,124 | $599–$899 |
| Subscription | Annual membership, ~$199–$399/yr | None | None |
| Estimated 5-year total | ~$3,594–$4,994 | ~$1,599–$2,124 | ~$599–$899 |
Read this before budgeting: these are estimated ranges from our September 2026 research, device-only — they exclude electricity, water, and cleaning supplies, and they assume the membership stays at its current level. Prices and membership fees change; confirm current pricing and membership terms on the brand's site before you buy. The full workings are in our 5-year math guide.
The takeaway: a Sleepme system costs roughly half of Eight Sleep's five-year total, and a BedJet costs roughly a fifth — for the same core job of keeping your sleep surface cool. Whether Eight Sleep's automation and tracking are worth that premium is a personal call, and our Eight Sleep review takes it seriously. But nobody should make that call without seeing this table first.
How each system cools
Eight Sleep Pod — water-based, fully automated
A fitted active cover goes over your existing mattress and circulates temperature-controlled water. Dual-zone control lets each side of the bed run independently, built-in sleep tracking feeds an adaptive schedule ("Autopilot") that adjusts temperature through the night, and the app handles everything. It's the most "it just does it for you" system we test. The membership is the asterisk: annual, and required for the full feature set.

Sleepme Chilipad Dock Pro — water-based, no subscription
A water-circulating mattress pad plus a bedside dock. Same core physics as Eight Sleep (water under you, temperature held all night), dual-zone available in a two-sleeper bundle, scheduling in the app — but no membership fee, and the pad cover is machine washable. The brand says setup takes about 20 minutes. You give up some of the automation polish; you keep roughly two thousand dollars over five years.

BedJet — air-based, simplest concept
No water at all. A quiet-ish fan unit beside the bed pushes conditioned air under your sheets through a sheet attachment, cooling (or gently warming) the whole sleep surface. Fewer parts, nothing to refill, no subscription, lowest price band. Dual-zone means a two-unit setup. The tradeoff: it's the most audible of the three, and it can't target your body temperature as precisely as water circulating directly beneath you.

Couples: dual-zone, three ways
| Couples' setup | Eight Sleep Pod | Sleepme Chilipad Dock Pro | BedJet |

| Independent sides | Yes, built into every unit | Yes, with the dual-zone bundle | Yes, with two units |
| What the second sleeper adds | Nothing extra — dual-zone is standard | Second dock + zones (check bundle pricing) | Second unit + sheet (check bundle pricing) |
| Subscription impact for two | One membership covers the bed | No membership | No membership |

Noise, setup, and daily life
- Noise: the water docks (Eight Sleep hub, Chilipad dock) hum softly — quieter than a white-noise machine on low in our testing. BedJet's fan is the most audible, roughly the level of a quiet room fan. Light sleepers: factor this in.
- Setup: Chilipad's brand claim is ~20 minutes; Eight Sleep's fitted cover takes longer (up to about an hour by most accounts) but then disappears into your bedding. BedJet needs no mattress work at all — unit beside the bed, sheet attachment on top.
- Maintenance: the water systems need refills and occasional cleaning; BedJet needs none.
- Trial and warranty: terms vary by brand and change — Sleepme has offered a 30-night trial with a 2-year limited warranty. Confirm current terms on each brand's site before ordering.
Our verdict
Pick Eight Sleep if you want maximum automation and sleep tracking and the membership cost doesn't bother you. Pick Sleepme Chilipad if you want water-based dual-zone cooling for two sleepers with no recurring fee — the best value in the premium tier. Pick BedJet if you want the simplest, cheapest path to a cooler bed and don't mind fan noise. Pick none yet if you're mainly fighting a hot room — fix the room first; a cooling system can't outrun a 80°F bedroom forever.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Eight Sleep membership really mandatory?
For the full feature set, yes — the annual membership gates the adaptive automation and complete app experience. That's why our cost tables always include it. Confirm exactly what's gated behind the membership on Eight Sleep's site, since feature packaging changes.
Which is quietest?
The water-based docks (Eight Sleep, Chilipad) are quieter than BedJet's fan in our testing. If noise is your top concern, lean water-based — and place the dock where its hum is muffled, not on a hard floor next to your head.
Can any of these fix my sleep problems?
No — and be skeptical of anyone who says otherwise. These are comfort devices: they keep your sleep surface at a temperature you find comfortable, which supports better sleep quality. They don't diagnose, treat, or cure insomnia, sleep apnea, or any medical condition. If you suspect a sleep disorder, talk to a doctor.
Do prices include the membership?
No — advertised device prices never include Eight Sleep's annual membership. That's precisely why we publish the 5-year tables with it added in.
