Sleep cooler. Know exactly what your cool bed costs you.

We test active bed-cooling systems the way you'd actually use them — on real mattresses, night after night. Eight Sleep, Sleepme Chilipad, and BedJet, judged on sleep comfort, noise, couples' dual-zone setups, and the honest five-year cost, subscription fees and all.

Our top 3 picks, by what you're looking for

★ Our top pick

Eight Sleep Pod

Verdict: The most automated system we test — a water-based cover on your existing mattress with dual-zone temperature control, sleep tracking, and schedules that adjust through the night. The catch is the annual membership: it's required for the full feature set, and it changes the real cost. Best if you want the smartest bed with the least fiddling.

Best for couples · no subscription

Sleepme Chilipad Dock Pro

Verdict: Water-based cooling and warming with dual-zone control for two sleepers — and no membership fee, ever. The pad goes on your current mattress, the cover is machine washable, and the price you pay is the whole price. Best for couples with different temperature needs who dislike subscriptions.

Best value for hot sleepers

BedJet

Verdict: The simplest idea in the category: an air-based unit that pushes conditioned air under your sheets, cooling or gently warming the whole bed. No water to fill, no subscription, and the lowest price band of the three. Best for hot sleepers who want comfort without the premium price.

How we rank: every system is installed on a reviewer's own mattress and used nightly over an extended testing window. We score sleep comfort through the night, noise, ease of setup, app and schedule reliability, dual-zone performance for couples, and true five-year cost of ownership. Read our methodology. Common questions

Do active bed-cooling systems actually make a difference?

In our nightly testing, yes — with the right expectations. Active systems genuinely change the temperature of your sleep surface, which is a different league from breathable sheets or phase-change fabrics that only help heat escape. What they do best is keep the bed from getting warmer than you want it to be as the night goes on, which supports more comfortable, less interrupted sleep. What they don't do is diagnose or treat any sleep condition — they're comfort devices. Our guide to how active cooling works explains the physics without the hype.

Do I need a subscription for any of these?

Only one of the three. Eight Sleep's Pod requires an annual membership for the full feature set (adaptive automation and the complete app experience). Sleepme's Chilipad and BedJet charge no subscription — the purchase price is the whole cost. Because Eight Sleep's membership recurs every year, it changes the five-year math dramatically: see our subscription vs. no-subscription breakdown.

Which system is best for couples who sleep at different temperatures?

All three offer dual-zone setups, but they get there differently — and the pricing of a two-person configuration varies a lot. Our couples' guide walks through dual-zone options for each system and what two sleepers should budget for.

Will a cooling system fit my existing mattress?

Yes for all three — none of them requires buying a new mattress. Eight Sleep's Pod and Sleepme's Chilipad are covers/pads that fit over your current mattress in standard sizes, and BedJet sits beside the bed with a sheet attachment. Confirm your exact mattress size against the brand's size chart before ordering.

Are these systems noisy?

There's some sound in every case — a bedside water dock hums softly, and BedJet's fan produces airflow noise. In our testing, the docks are quieter than a typical white-noise machine on low; BedJet is the most audible of the three but still fades into the background for most sleepers. Light sleepers should weigh noise as a real factor — it's in our scoring for every review.
