How Active Bed Cooling Actually Works

There's a lot of fog around bed cooling, most of it marketing. Here's the plain version: your body needs to shed heat to settle into sleep comfortably, your mattress traps that heat, and active cooling systems do something about it in real time — instead of just letting heat escape a little faster, the way breathable fabrics do.
Passive vs. active: the line that matters
Passive cooling — moisture-wicking sheets, phase-change fabrics, ventilated foams — helps heat leave your sleep surface a bit more efficiently. It can't make your bed cooler than the room; it can only slow down how fast it warms up. Think of it as better insulation in reverse.
Active cooling changes the temperature of the sleep surface itself, continuously, all night. A machine holds your bed at the temperature you set — or moves it through a schedule — fighting your body heat as it's produced. The two approaches: water vs. air
Water-based (Eight Sleep, Sleepme Chilipad)
A bedside unit heats or cools water and circulates it through channels in a pad or fitted cover under you. Water carries heat far more efficiently than air, so these systems hold a precise, even temperature across the whole sleep surface — and they can target your body temperature closely because the water layer sits directly beneath you. The tradeoffs: you refill a reservoir, there's a soft pump hum, and the hardware costs more.
Air-based (BedJet)
A fan unit pushes temperature-conditioned air under your sheets. No water, no pads, nothing to refill. It cools (and gently warms) the whole sleep surface with moving air — effective at keeping the bed from heating up, less precise at holding an exact body temperature. The tradeoff is fan noise and a breezier sensation some sleepers love and others don't.
Why body temperature matters for sleep comfort
Your core body temperature naturally dips as you settle toward sleep — it's part of the wind-down process. A bed that traps heat fights that process; a bed held at a comfortable temperature doesn't. That's the whole mechanism: active cooling removes a source of discomfort (a too-warm bed), which supports more comfortable, less interrupted sleep. Cooler sleep environments are widely associated with better sleep comfort — roughly the low-to-mid 60s °F for the room is the commonly cited sweet spot — but the sleep surface is what these systems control, and it's the surface your body actually feels.
What the specs really mean
- Temperature range (e.g., 55°F–115°F): less important than it looks. You'll live in a narrow band inside it. What matters is how steadily the system holds your setting through the night — that's what we score in testing.

What active cooling can't do
Worth saying plainly: these are comfort devices. They make your bed feel the way you want it to feel, which supports better sleep quality. They don't diagnose, treat, or cure insomnia, sleep apnea, or any medical condition — and any company or review that implies otherwise is one to be skeptical of. If you have persistent sleep problems, talk to a doctor, not a gadget.
