About SlumberChill
SlumberChill is an independent review publication with one job: test active bed-cooling systems — the machines that actively cool (and warm) your sleep surface and hold it at a chosen temperature all night — and tell you honestly which ones are worth your money. That category and nothing else: Eight Sleep, Sleepme's Chilipad, and BedJet.
Our angle is the one the big review sites skip: the true cost of ownership. A bed-cooling system with an annual membership is a fundamentally different purchase from one without it, and we believe you should see the five-year math before you see the buy button.
How we test: the nightly-use lab protocol
Every system goes through the same process — on a reviewer's own mattress, used the way you'd use it:
- Real installation, timed. We set each system up exactly as a buyer would — no PR assistance — and time it. Setup friction is scored, because an hour of assembly is part of the product.
- Nightly use over an extended window. Each system gets used every night for weeks, not demoed for an afternoon. We log comfort settings, schedule behavior, and anything that interrupts sleep — noise, app glitches, temperature drift.
- Sleep comfort through the night. The core score: does the sleep surface feel like the temperature you asked for, all night, night after night? We evaluate comfort and sleep quality only — never medical outcomes.
- Noise. Measured by ear in a real bedroom, at the pillow. Docks hum, fans whir; we report what we hear and whether it fades into the background.
- App and schedule reliability. We program schedules and check whether they actually run — the automation is only as good as its follow-through.
- Dual-zone for couples. Where the system supports two sleepers, we test two sleepers: independent temperatures, the feel of the split, and whether the "his and hers" setup survives real use.
- True cost of ownership. Device price plus every recurring fee, projected over five years. Published in our tables, updated when pricing changes.
Re-tests and updates
These systems change — firmware updates, membership repricing, new models. We re-test and update our verdicts at least every quarter, and every page shows its last-updated date. If a system changes, our rankings change.
Editorial independence
We earn money through affiliate commissions (full disclosure here), but commissions never influence scores or rankings. Companies don't preview our reviews, don't pay for placement, and don't see verdicts before publication. If a system is loud or overpriced, we say so — even if it pays us.
Our stance on health claims
Bed-cooling systems are comfort devices. We describe what they do in terms of sleep comfort and sleep quality — "supports better sleep," "keeps the bed comfortable through the night." We never claim they diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition — not insomnia, not sleep apnea, not anything else. If you have a persistent sleep problem, talk to a doctor. We hold the brands we cover to the same line: we mirror their language, not their hype.
Who runs this
SlumberChill is run by a small independent editorial team. We buy or are loaned the systems we review, install them on our own beds, use them nightly, and re-test quarterly. We don't accept payment for placement, and we don't invent test results — when we haven't measured something, we say so.
